Auction Q&A
On Saturday evening, February 11, 2012, we will hold the “Love Is…” Benefit Auction at the Jerry Brockey Center at South Seattle Community College. This PTSA sponsored auction will benefit all students at Gregory Heights Elementary School in Burien, Washington
Why are we having an auction?
This is our school’s biggest fundraising event. Washington State continues to cut the K-12 budget and this has left all our public schools severely short-funded. These cuts directly impact our children at Gregory Heights. Beginning this school year there is no district funding at all for Libraries. This means books cannot be replaced and programs that inspire and enhance reading and literacy skills are harder to implement. The same goes for field trips which provide important hands-on, real world experiences.
Where will the money be used?
The PTSA funds things that are not covered under the school’s operating budget. Funds from our past auction were used to buy netbooks, buses for field trips, books for the library, new instruments for Mrs. Bede’s music room, start-up robotics club and run all other clubs. Grant money is also given directly to the school which helps supplement their operating budget.
What does my ticket buy?
Your ticket includes a fabulous dinner and covers the cost of the facilities.
How does an auction work?
At an auction, items are offered for sale to the highest bidder. Items can go for more than the stated value, but often go for less (a great opportunity to pick up some real deals!) The Gregory Heights Love Is…benefit auction is divided up into two parts: a silent auction and a live auction.
Where does all that cool stuff come from?
Some of the most popular items are teacher adventures which are donated by individual teachers or teachers who decide to work together to provide an adventure. Some unique experiences are parties or events donated by Gregory families such as hosting a themed party, teaching a class, or offering a few hours of yard work or other sought after services. Other items come from local businesses and employers of Gregory Heights parents. Items include gift certificates and products from all your favorite places– restaurants, retail stores, professional services, and much more. Class Projects: These are by far our most competitive items. Many classes create one-of-a-kind pieces that are offered for sale during the live auction. These pieces are mementos to be treasured.
Who can come to the auction?
Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, neighbors, teachers, staff…Anyone can attend (except the kids!) In general, the more people who attend the auction, the more money we make for the school. So start thinking about who to invite!
What should I wear?
This year’s theme is “Love Is…” and since the auction is just a few days before Valentine’s Day we’d like you to consider this a chance to have a nice night out on the town. Dress up or be casual but be prepared to have fun!
How can I help?
There are several ways to help out. We hope you will contribute in the way that works best for your family.
You can:
- Attend the auction!
- Volunteer to work at the auction as a spotter pointing out bid numbers, as a runner taking winning bid sheets to the “bank”, as “bank-teller” and in-put winning bidder info into the computer system or, help set-up the auction and clean-up afterwards.
- Donate a service or an item. Get creative! Have a talent, a passion, or access to something unique (e.g. tickets to an event, access to a time-share, skills to teach a class).
- Volunteer to help a class make a class project.
Every child at Gregory Heights—including your child—will benefit from Auction funds. But the auction is not possible without your support. Thanks in advance for participating!
